This year, the annual Sitola laboratory Seminar (SitSem 2011) took place in pension Cikhaj (Zdar nad Sazavou) on 15. — 17. September 2011.

During the seminar, there were held several presentations (including invited talks, students’ talks as well as panel discussions) supplemented by several leisure activities.

Musicians played on the same stage yet 150 kilometres apart

Our laboratory participated in a unique experiment in which musicians Michael Dessen, Mark Dresser and Myra Melford performed for two audiences at the same time in spite of the fact that the listeners as well as the jazz trio itself were divided between two stages 150 kilometres apart.

The two unique music performances that took place in California on 16 and 17 April were made possible by the UltraGrid technology, in development by a team of researchers of CESNET, the association of Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The unusual cultural event was a part of TeleMotions: A Networked Intermedia Concert, made possible by the University of California Center for Research in Computing and the Arts (CRCA). In professional terms, this was a very demanding operation: achieving the effect of a normal concert without all the musicians being present on the same stage is not an easy task, because hearing is much more sensitive to delay and all sorts of failures than eyesight. Yet the experiment was a success, pleasing the musicians, the audiences and the network specialists.

A competition within course PV177

In the current semester, one of the groups in course PV177 is directed at the topic of peer-to-peer networks. For these students, we provide a possibility to test their knowledge in practice by taking part in a P2P game which is currently being prepared.

For this purpose, a virtual infrastructure consisting of 60 nodes and with simulated real network conditions has been created. The students should create a system for content sharing. However, they are not supposed to write the system from scratch, as they will be provided with a skeleton of peer-to-peer application, which can be freely (in the extent of Gentlemen’s agreement) modified. Resulting implementations would be evaluated in terms of effectivity and robustness.

Excursion in the laboratory for Mathematical Olympiad participants

On Thursday, March 31st, 2011 was in the SITOLA laboratory prepared excursion for participants in the statewide round of the 60th Mathematical Olympiad for secondary school students.

Those interested in could hear four brief talks on the workings of the laboratory and on a few of current laboratory projects as well. During talks were shown several technical devices used in projects. Talks were given by Vít Rusňák, Lukáš Ručka, Pavel Šiler and Jiří Filipovič.

March 14^th, 2011 was born his daughter Hana (51 cm, 3 kg). We congratulate the proud parents, wish Hana sound health and all the family a lot of common joy.

Participation in the “Good Morning” show

Sitola laboratory was asked for a cooperation in the filming of the Good Morning show with Czech Television. Our part of the show focused on the acquisition, processing and display of stereoscopic (3D) video, its past and future. The filming took place on Thursday, April 29th, 2010, with the role of the speaker faithfully and successfully undertaken by Milos Liska. The show will be aired on May 10th, 2010 at approximately 7:43 am. The show will also be available from the CT archive.

Complex MetaCentrum workload traces available now

New complex workload traces from the Czech National Grid Infrastructure MetaCentrum have been published. The data sets contains:

job descriptions (103656 jobs)
node descriptions (14 clusters, 806 CPUs)
list of queues
descriptions of machines in maintenance (failures & upgrades)
descriptions of dedicated and reserved machines

Alea 2 – new version of Grid and cluster scheduling simulator

New version of Alea Grid and cluster scheduling simulator was published. It supports several new features such as visualization, resource failures, several workload trace formats and more.

Demonstration of low latency HD video transmission at symposium Networked Visualization for e-Science

As a part of Networked Visualization for e-Science symposium live uncompressed HD video transmission was demonstrated. Software UltraGrid was used for streaming live video from The Laboratory of Advanced Networking Technologies to SAGE tiled screen at SARA computer and network center. Both places were interconnected through CzechLight’s, StarLight’s and NehterLight’s high-speed fibre links.

The symposium was organized on the occasion of the visit of prof. Thomas DeFanti to the University of Amsterdam. Prof. DeFanti is well known for his groundbreaking work in computer graphics and visualisation and is one of the inventors of the CAVE.
